How to Choose the Best Photo for a Custom Pet Portrait

If you are wondering, "Will this picture work?", don't worry. Just follow these 4 simple tips to choose (or take) the absolute best photo of your pet.

1. Natural Lighting is Everything

Lighting can make or break a photo. The best lighting is always natural daylight.

• Do: Take the photo outside on a cloudy day, or indoors facing a large window. This provides soft, even lighting that highlights the true color of your pet's fur and the sparkle in their eyes.
• Don't: Avoid taking photos in dark rooms, at night, or using a harsh camera flash. Flash can cause glowing "laser eyes" and wash out the beautiful details of your pet’s face.

2. Get Down to Their Eye Level

To capture your pet's true personality and facial structure, we need to see them straight on.

• Do: Crouch, sit, or lay down on the floor so your camera is right at your pet's eye level. A straight-on shot gives our artists the perfect reference for their ears, nose, and eyes.
• Don't: Avoid taking the photo from above (looking down at your pet) or from weird angles. An angled shot distorts their proportions and makes it hard to capture a symmetrical outline.

3. Keep It Clear and Close-Up

Since our artists focus heavily on the facial features—especially for our signature ear outlines—we need to see the details clearly!

• Do: Make sure the photo is sharp and in focus. Your pet's face and chest should take up the majority of the frame.
• Don't: Please don't send screenshots, heavily zoomed-in photos, or blurry action shots. If you can't see the individual hairs on their ears when you look at the photo, our artists won't be able to either!

4. Remove Obstructions and Accessories

We want your pet to be the star of the show!

• Do: Ensure their ears, eyes, and neck are fully visible. If they have floppy ears, make sure both are in the frame.
• Don't: Avoid photos where your pet is heavily covered by blankets, holding large toys in their mouth, or wearing bulky accessories (unless you specifically want those drawn).
